The Leather Bottle, a worn down pub, with torn up carpets, peeling wallpapers, and chairs that look like they'd fall apart if you stared at them hard enough. A thick cloud of cigarette smoke lingers in the air, you get used to it. But the Leather Bottle was a place of community for the people of Betteshanger, an escape from the chaos of the world outside. Join Paul, George, Sammy, Benny and Lucy. Five friends on their journey through the 1980s. Be plunged into the heart of the acid house rave scene, lowered into the mines of East Kent, and shipped out to sea to fight in the Falklands. As hope appears to dwindle out, we look to find a symbol. A light to guide us through the tunnel, but will it ever show us the way? Or abandon us in absolute darkness...
Slick, fast paced and visceral- Persistent Shadows is ensemble storytelling at its absolute finest.
This young graduate company have created a sophisticated piece of theatre that grips you from the moment you enter the space. With well developed characters that flow seamlessly from drama to narration and expertly choreographed physical sequences- the show takes you on a dark and nostalgic journey through the turbulent events of the late 20th Century, with an excellently curated soundtrack to punctuate the tale. With a clever use of set to create the backdrop of a working class pub in a mining village, the story follows the lives of a group friends; the various pathways they take; and the persistent shadows that haunt them all.
Persistent shadows has a maturity that is well beyond the years of the creators, and their first professional offering sets the bar very high. Five Stars. - Jo Billingham, Theatre maker & Director
